Pigeons and bikes. Two things that people today probably have strong feelings about. Not positive feelings, most likely. However, these are two things that have enormous impacts on today’s world. Bicycles are extremely efficient machines for getting from one place to another – the first car was built from bicycle components, and the first asphalt roads were laid for bicycles. Pigeons are even more efficient. Not only do they have accurate navigational systems, but they can also sustain high speeds for hundreds of miles.
Cher Ami (pronounced like the musician and “uh me”) is an homage to Detroit’s French past; translated it means, “Dear friend.” It is also a famous messenger pigeon from World War I. In 1918, despite numerous injuries, Cher Ami was awarded a medal after he was able to fly miles in time to deliver a message saving many of the soldiers in America’s Lost Platoon.
